PURPOSE OF SAC
Each school in DoDDS has its own School Advisory Committee or SAC. The Department of Defense encourages professional employee and family participation in the formation and operation of overseas local school advisory committees. Committee members, elected from the community and the schools, are responsible for advising the principal on education-related matters. SAC is strictly an advisory body that has no budget and is restricted from fundraising. SAC members advise the principal on school policies, program staffing as it relates to the instructional program, budget, facilities, maintenance, administrative procedures, pupil personnel services, educational resources, program evaluation, student standards of conduct, and the school meal program. The SAC functions somewhat like School Boards at public schools in the U.S. with one notable exception - SAC has no power to hire or fire teachers or administrators.
Throughout the year, SAC:
- Reviews school policies and programs currently in place.
- Helps resolve safety issues and their community concerns about the school
- Will lobby for change when a current situation needs improvement.
- Encourages community involvement in the education of children.
Increase Community involvement in SAC
Emphasize the school and home partnerships
Contact a SAC member if you have any concerns about your child’s school. If the issue can be handled by the SAC, it will be brought up at a SAC meeting. If the issue is beyond the scope of SAC, a SAC member will help direct you to the person or agency who can help you.
SAC generally meets once a month on the fourth Tuesday at 1600 in the school Information Center. The public is welcome to attend any SAC meeting. A limited time is available at each meeting for new business that is not on the agenda.
Elections are held during the second week of September. There are 3 Non-Voting Members of the SAC are: the Principal, the bargaining unit representative, and the School's Officer. Command representatives are also non-voting, should they attend.
CONTACTING A SAC MEMBER
You have a variety of options for contacting a SAC member: use the telephone, drop off a letter in the SAC box located on the counter in the front office, send a note marked for SAC to the school with your child, or write to SAC c/o the school using the MPS address or school email address.
